Our chemist measures all the Daniel Smith Watercolors using the spectrophotometer (it evaluates color based on how we see)--we then plot out Color Map (page 22-23 in 2006 Reference Catalog). There were eight colors that revealed themselves as the cleanest, truest representatives of their color families. We were surprised to see Amazonite Genuine and Rhodonite Genuine, two of our Primatek natural-pigment colors, among them. Who knew earth colors could be so vibrant? I began mixing the eight colors and found clean, transparent natural color mixtures. Beautiful! By adding Quinacridone Gold and Quinacridone Burnt Orange, I was able to take the color to another level. The Quinacridones, clean created punchy, rich, vivid, and transparent mixtures--including an amazing array of greens. In fact the clean, clear, colors in this set easily make all the colors of the natural world, including luminous neutrals. Deep, rich grays and browns are a key part of my color palette—brighter colors appear more brilliant when surrounded by neutral tones. I keep the color grid, made with all the colors in this set, on the wall in my studio. It takes a little time to make, but is well worth the investment when you reveal all these new mixtures.
