Daniel Smith's Heart and Soul - The Manufacturing Lab
Today DANIEL SMITH is known worldwide as a manufacturer and retailer of top quality artists' materials. But back in 1976, the whole company consisted of Dan Smith himself and one used three-roll mill. Dan began making ink because, as a printmaker, he saw a need for printing inks geared to the needs of fine artists. Later he started selling support materials such as paper and etching plates, and from there the company grew into a full-service art supply store. A lot has changed, but making innovative, top quality art materials is still our primary concern. "I love making stuff-that's the best thing of all as far as I'm concerned," says Dan.

Behind the south wall of our Seattle store, a small team of longtime employees makes all of the Daniel Smith paints, inks and mediums. Each tube of paint or can of ink is mixed, milled and packaged by hand. It is not a large-scale industrial operation, but rather the work of a dedicated group of craftsmen. From the start, Daniel Smith has been known as a pioneer of new products to the market. Our lines of paint and ink showcase many of the innovative pigments developed since the 1940s-bright, strong and lightfast-along with the time-honored classics.

We have always chosen pigments that minimize health risks, are reliable, and are as lightfast as possible. Daniel Smith paints and inks will help your artwork last. Our commitment to research, development and quality control allows us to produce the finest products. Each product is tested extensively before we offer it to our customers.

Our product line has grown along with our manufacturing expertise. We now make six lines of colors: We also make eight colors of gesso and numerous painting and printing mediums.

Dan Smith's desire to provide the best materials available shows in the paints and inks we offer. And as a company we truly appreciate the enthusiastic response our paints and inks have received from the art community.

A Brush with Greatness
The Daniel Smith company also produces a broad line of fine art brushes. Our Kolinsky Sable brushes are among the finest hand-made brushes in the world. In fact, each of our watercolor, Sumi-e, oil and acrylic lines comprise a world-class selection of artist-designed and master-crafted brushes.

Artists have had significant involvement in the development of our brushes. The materials, balance and responsiveness of our brushes are the direct result of their input. When you hold a Daniel Smith brush, this attention to design details is immediately apparent, yet the innate quality will be appreciate for years to come. Our designs are often copied, but never duplicated.

Our reputation is built on the uniqueness of the product we manufacture and the consistancy artists have come to trust - we would have it no other way.
