Dear Friends,
I invite you to celebrate a special anniversary with me.
DANIEL SMITH Artists Materials turns 30 this year and,
after so many years in the business, we are happy and thankful
to continue our tradition of innovation and service. To mark
this festive occasion we ve put together a catalog with over
1,000 new items, unique exclusive products and stories that
feature our diverse and talented customers. Over the years I
have had the pleasure of reading thousands of customer let
-
ters; many containing your artwork or stories of success with
DANIEL SMITH materials. This year a print I created while
developing some of our products is displayed on the cover.
Throughout the catalog, you ll nd stories that have inspired
us to remain as creative in bringing you exceptional products
as you are in using them!
Like the title of my print, it is with both contemplation and
reflection that I look back over the last 30 years at DANIEL
SMITH Artists' Materials. When I began making inks in
1976 my operation was small; in fact, I sold my motorcycle
to buy my first 3-roll mill. From the very beginning artists
took notice and shared their suggestions and excitement. Now the company has a brilliant in-house
chemist, a staff of knowledgeable sales associates and a team of individuals that bring you amazing
materials from all over the world. We are proud to make our own inks, watercolors, oils and acryl
-
ics in the U.S.A., right in the same Seattle location as our flagship retail store and our catalog sales
center.
True to our beginnings, DANIEL SMITH remains the leader in innovation and expertise. We're
proud to introduce the glittery new PrimaTek watercolor, Kyanite Genuine--just one example of
a paint you won't find anywhere else. Our passion for color shows this year in an updated ver

sion of "The Study of Color" InkSmith. This comprehensive guide is our most requested article.
I hope you enjoy reading about your favorite colors as you browse through our expanded product
selection. Be sure to visit our printmaking section to see two new presses; after all, printmaking
is where it all began. You'll also notice our new "Tools" section in this catalog--we've put all the
handy sundries and supplies in one easy place to make shopping for the perfect materials for your
project even easier.
When I decided to begin making artists materials 30 years ago I did so to improve on the qual

ity and selection offered to artists. Little did I know that I would create a community of artists to
share in that endeavor. I thank the thousands of you who sent your slides in response to our annual
"Faces and Places" contest. This year's judges were presented with a huge challenge to choose four
out of the many beautiful works we viewed. With such an amazing response, we decided to delve a
bit deeper and feature the stories behind some of the work that captured our imagination. I hope
you enjoy our "In My Studio" articles about customers whose styles and inspiration are as varied
as the work they create. Their passion for art moves all of us at DANIEL SMITH and they are a
reflection of the unique and creative customers that have made our first 30 years a grand adventure.
