A
aron Jasinski hails from the greater
Seattle area where he works as an il-
lustrator and artist. The city's cultural mix
of urban and high-tech often pops up in his
darkly whimsical pieces. The year-round
green flora and moody rainy days appear in
the bold colors he uses in his paintings, but
it is the expressive faces and postures of his
subjects that captivate people.
Jasinski paints primarily in acrylics, which
he says fits his personality and work style.
I love how it is fast drying, can be thick like
oils, or thinned down to near-watercolor
consistency. And I know this will sound
like a plug, but it really is true...I only use
Daniel Smith acrylics because I nd they
have richer colors and a luminescence unlike
other acrylics I have used. Some people even
ask me if I use oils. I love oils but I don't
have the time to wait for them to dry.
On his background, he cites his selec-
tion as the Modern Postcard Featured Artist
where he was flown out to the New York
Art Expo, as a signi cant event. Later, in
2004 he was featured at Los Angeles La Luz
De Jesus Gallery annual show. "That," he
said, "was a great honor." Since then he's
been showing in various galleries in the Los
Angeles area and, significant to his work,
has been on a handful of trips to Europe.
He comments, "I love the rich history and
beautiful architecture, and people."
Early 20th Century art is a big influence
for him. "I think that was a very interesting
period in art where there was a lot of explo-
ration in painting. I especially enjoy Chagall
and Modigliani...I really geek out on paint-
erly brushwork. I love seeing where an artist
has been on a piece. I also admire an artist
that can communicate form with only a
few strokes." Beyond that, he is inspired by
Cubism, Fauvism and Expressionism, which
he ties together with a contemporary twist,
and, "hopefully a dash of whimsy."
Jasinski gets to the heart of his artwork
when he says, "I find it fascinating when
people who see my art make up their own
story or interject
their own symbol-
ism in what is
going on. I try to
paint for that."
He is also excit-
ed by the contem-
porary West Coast
scene. "There are
some amazing
up-and-coming
artists such as
Greg Simkins, Joe
Ledbetter, Blaine
Fontana, Luke
Chueh, and heavy hitters like Joe Sorren,
Mark Ryden, and Rafal Olbinski. In truth
there are way too many to name."
