While it can be used to modify paints made

with linseed oil, poppyseed oil has two disad-

vantages. It dries very slowly and creates a film

prone to cracking.

Crystals--Damar is a natural resin tapped

from the damar fir tree. When dissolved

in pure gum turpentine, it yields a varnish

which can be used as a final picture varnish

or thinned with more turpentine and stand

oil to make a glazing medium.

manufactured from carefully distilled pine

this petroleum hydrocarbon for turpen-

include damar--it's a good alternative for

Paint Thinner is a strong solvent that

speeds drying time when added to paint and

is ideal for cleaning brushes. It has a slight

pale yellow color with a mild citrus odor,

and should be be used in a well-ventilated

DANIEL SMITH Cobalt Drier This viscous

purple liquid reduces drying times by attracting

oxygen more quickly to the paint film. Made by

cooking cobalt salts in linseed oil, it should be used

sparingly (not more than 5%). Cobalt drier is useful

when added to glazing mediums containing stand

oil, pure gum turpentine and damar varnish. It may

alter colors slightly especially whites.
