Extenders and Inert Pigments
Extenders and other miscellaneous pigments
are used as fillers and modifiers in the making
of paints, inks, pastels and grounds.
+ Aluminum Sulfate
Used as a mordant, aluminum sulfate (alum)
is sponged on paper to help marbling paints
adhere properly.
+ Blanc Fixe
(barium sulfate ground) Used as a base for
opaque lakes, as a ground for scratchboard
or as a white in watercolor or fresco
painting.
+ Carrageenan
Powdered North Sea seaweed. Used exten-
sively as a thickener in foods, non-toxic car-
rageenan makes an excellent marbling size.
+ China Clay
(hydrated aluminium silicate) An inert pig-
ment used in pastels.
+ French Chalk (Talc)
Used to dust the image area, prior to etch-
ing, in lithography. Ours is asbestos-free.
+ Gum Tragacanth
Derived from various species of the astraga-
lus shrub, which is found throughout Asia.
Used primarily as a binder in making pastels
and chalk crayons.
+ Magnesium Carbonate
A very white, inert pigment used to add
body to ink.
+ Marble Dust
(natural calcium or magnesium carbonate)
A mortar in mural or fresco painting.
+ Precipitated Chalk
(synthetic calcium carbonate) White pigment
used in glue, aqueous mediums and in pastels.
+ Terra Alba: (gypsum; natural calcium sulfate)
A very white, inert pigment used in
painting grounds.
