   About DANIEL SMITH

Caroline Buchanan

Caroline lives on a small, non-ferry island, Obstruction, between Orcas and Blakely in the San Juans. She and her husband, Jeffrey Unterschuetz, have carved a charming enclave in the remote island. Her life is her art. Getting the mail, the groceries, etc. means crossing the water, often in her Whitehall rowboat. She sees the water and islands from a boater's perspective. A walk from their dock is past rugged rocks and stately firs. Carolinešs watercolors reflect the peace and calm one finds in the islands. Caroline holds a BA with honors in Art History from Wellesley College and a Masters in Teaching in Art (specializing in teaching adults) from Western Oregon State College. She is a Past President, Vice President, and Board Member of the Watercolor Society of Oregon and a Signature Member of the Northwest Watercolor Society.

Her reputation reaches far beyond the islands. Winter Watercolor 97 published an article on "Saying More with Less: Learning from Cezanne's Watercolor." Summer Watercolor 96 did a profile of her lifestyle live your dream in "Painting with Eagles." Her paintings are in corporate, private, and museum collections.

In June of '04, she had a sixty painting retrospective exhibit at the LaSells Stewart Gallery of Oregon State University in Corvallis. She was featured in the Spring '97 Daniel Smith catalog with a 5-page article on layering watercolors. Daniel Smith named a palette after her personal choice of pigments. They featured her again in February of 2004 with an article she wrote describing the role of values in painting.

Caroline led painting trips to the Greek Islands every spring, 1982 - 2000, taking more than 800 people to paint in the Aegean light. She led other trips to Costa Rica, Cornwall, and Provence. Caroline has a reputation for well-organized classes with clear objectives and carefully designed progressions. Her personal interest in the students, her openness, enthusiasm and good humor are hallmarks of her classes.

Making Sense of Staining, Sedimentary and Transparent Pigments
Published: 10/19/2006
I have come to the conclusion that all the pigments are wonderful-staining, sedimentary and transparent (I like to call transparents luminous, since all watercolor, by its nature, is transparent). Each type has both positive and negative characteristics. It's when you use them that makes the difference.
Shadow Shape Drawings

You are asked to do a value study for your paintings. Sound familiar? You think you know what that is, so you sit down and draw the things that will be in your paintings and shade them-darks, mid-tones and lights. Is a collection of things a value plan? You aren't really sure.
