James Brantley
James Brantley has been drawing and painting for over 40 years. In 1998, he retired from teaching high school art so that he could devote himself full-time to painting and drawing. In the 2 years since his retirement, he has won a number of national and international awards, including Best of Show at the 2000 Louisiana Watercolor Society International Exhibition in New Orleans. He has also earned signature membership in The American Watercolor Society(AWS), The National Watercolor Society(NWS), and The Watercolor Society of Alabama (WSA).
James is a signature membership in The Southern Watercolor Society and served as president of The Watercolor Society of Alabama from 1999-2000. He is currently serving as treasurer of The Southern Watercolor Society.

| One of the most difficult things to do when painting portraits in transparent watercolor is to make skin and hair look like skin and hair. While I often use loose washes, drips and splatters in watercolor, I also like to use the drybrush technique to achieve perfect textures.
