Beneath a canopy of rustling leaves groups of strikingly striped trees demand attention. With dramatic peeling bark and a zebra-like look, birch trees make an intriguing subject for artists to paint. Daniel Smith’s Birch Forest Triad captures the look of these woodland favorites with three unique watercolor pigments.

Manganese Blue Hue starts your study with a wash of color for a brilliant blue sky. Envio-Friendly Yellow Iron Oxide brings a warm amber-hue to the tree’s autumn leaves. Finally, Black Tourmaline Genuine adds the stripes, dots and dashes characteristic of birch bark to bring your painting to life. Add depth and dimension by combining the colors for green-gray neutrals on the forest floor.

Manganese Blue Hue is a lovely semi-transparent cool turquoise. At full strength this powerful pigment is bold and bright. Mix with water to create clean washes with subtle granulation ideal for a sunny summer sky. Great in mixtures, Manganese Blue Hue creates a range of green shades when mixed with bright yellows. Try mixing with its trio-mate, Enviro-Friendly Yellow Iron Oxide, to make deep green-gray neutrals.
