ANY of the Artist Grade Colored Pencils (like Prismacolor or Derwent Coloursoft) are good to start. Oil based pencils like Caran d'Ache Pablo or Faber-Castell Polychromos work well on harder paper or surfaces. We recommend that over time you try as many brands as you can, because they all vary in texture or hardness. Caran d'Ache Luminance Pencils are recommended by the Colored Pencil Society of America for their lightfast quality. For beginning students who are not selling their work, then other brands that are less expensive are recommended.
The following list will help you get started in this course. Prismacolor Premier by Sanford is a pencil many beginners select. If you can, get a full set of 132 but at least the set of 24. There are three grey series: purchase at least one (cool, warm, or French). In addition, a set of Verithin Colored Pencils will help achieve clean edges. The item numbers listed in blue will be necessary for you to complete the course. If you already have similar items in your supply box, only purchase what is necessary. I also list the Luminance for advanced colored pencil artists.
