R&F Encaustic Medium, encaustic paint without pigment, is used to extend colors and create transparencies.
Encaustic is an ancient technique, dating to the 5th century BC. Wax is melted on a heated palette and applied to a rigid surface. It is then fused or "burned in" to create exquisite visual effects. Encaustic can be sculpted, molded, textured, layered, collaged, scribed or scraped, and can always be reworked by reheating. Extremely durable, it will not deteriorate, yellow or darken over time and is impervious to moisture.
R&F Encaustic Paints are made in the USA in small batches, with each color milled to bring out the individual characteristics of the pigment. The proportion of wax to resin is varied to bring out a uniform workability and hard finish.
