Mortars and Pestles are ideal for breaking up dry pigment prior to dispersion in a vehicle, or for making paints and pastels.
The mortars is heavy white porcelain, unglazed on the inside to facilitate grinding. The pestle is glazed porcelain with an unglazed grinding end.
