Product Description

HOT CAKES Cerulean Blue 1.5fl oz
Enkaustikos Hot Cakes come in convenient tins, making it extremely easy to do encaustic wax painting. The flat-bottomed metal tins let the paint melt evenly when placed on a pancake griddle or hot tray heated to 150-175 degrees, and keep the paint contained and dust-free during storage. Hot Cakes are made with a base of pharmaceutical-grade beeswax and fine damar resin, colored with lightfast, artist-grade pigments chosen to withstand the heat requirements of encaustic painting. Create thin, transparent glazes or heavy impasto textures, model the surface, rework by re-applying heat and revel in this unique, tactile and durable medium that has been used for millenia.

Quality
How would you describe the quality of this product?
I love hot cakes for the most part. I really like being able to keep a pure color on my plate and just being able to shut my plate off and remove the tin once it is cooled. I did notice that (at least for my titanium white) a good stir before shutting down would keep the pigment mixed. If you work small scale, these are a good value and easy to use with smaller brushes - especially in the standard/smaller size. If you work larger size, the value diminishes, even if you re-use the tins. Overall, good item to put in a starter kit for a budding encaustic artist or to just keep on your plate for easy color access.
Performance
How did this product perform compared to your expectations?
Well. I expected it to be easy to melt, easy to cool, nicely contained. All of the above.
Use
What project did you use this product for?
I use it for small scale (8x10 and smaller) encaustic mixed media projects. Specifically, I tend to dip a brush into the tin to pick up enough paint to splatter drops on my support.
Value
Was this product true to its value?
So far. Definitely get as much as they say you will, but the value to me will be determined on things like whether it continually reheats well (I've only used it twice), if the pigment stays suspended, etc.
Overall Experience
What was your overall experience with this product?
So far, really good.
