Product Description

Lunar Black (PBk11) 15ml Tube, DANIEL SMITH Extra Fine Watercolor

Imagine a transparent black with an expansive value range and pigment particles that react like magnetic shavings attracting and repelling each other.

Unique pigment properties make Lunar Black a radically reticulating color. When dry, a Lunar Black wash resembles a marbled moonscape. This mottled stony texture can be successfully glazed. You can even gently paint into a wet to damp Lunar Black, dropping in watery pigment-virtually any combination of favorites.

Lunar Black is an inorganic neutral black watercolor pigment and a Daniel Smith exclusive. Think Black Magic-and re-think black.

  • ASTM Lightfastness Rating: Excellent - Not yet rated by ASTM - Rating based on Daniel Smith's independent testing.

Performance
How did this product perform compared to your expectations?
Exceeded my expectations.
How would you describe the consistency?
Creamy and easy to work with.
Use
How did you use this color in a painting?
I used it as a base for wet, shadowed soil at the base of a Rhododendron bush. It almost magically separated to a gravelly dark into which I charged Burnt Umber and Buff Titanium. When dry, I re-wetted and glazed with a light Terra Verte/Prussian Green mix (all Daniel Smith watercolors).
Value
Was this product true to its value?
Yep.
Overall Experience
What was your overall experience with this product?
I can see lots of further applications: roads, rocks, pine tree bark. I was pleased to see how well it "played" with other colors and yet retained its own texture. It was kind of amazing - and this is just the first time I've used it! It was fun to use.
